ENJOY.... :)
The last person I expected to see on my doorstep was Jace. Jace, with his missionary blonde hair, big sky blue eyes, tall slender body, and mysterious smile. And yet, there he was. Standing in my doorstep.
Dang, he looked good.
I glanced down at my outfit. Classic jean shorts. Solid V neck shirt. Wow. Classy.
"Hey, Jane." he said. A true smile spread across his face when he said my name.
"Can I steal you for a minute?"
"Umm..." I glanced into the house. My sisters were watching TV and Mom was nowhere to be found.
"Sure." I stepped out onto the porch and closed the door. "What's up? You look nice." Man, that blue shirt matched his eyes.
"Oh, thanks," he said, clearly pleased I had noticed.
"So...um.. I have a surprise for you. But you have to wear this." He held out a blind fold.
"Uh...." this was odd. Very odd. I had only met Jace twice before. But, let's be honest. We totally hit it off. But, you know, with Jace entering the MTC like...in two days..nothing really could go anywhere.
After I shot him a quizzical look, he said, "Trust me."
And then he smiled the smile that made his eyes twinkle like stars on a cloudless night. How could I say no to that? So I put the blindfold on and next thing I know I'm in his car and we are traveling to some undisclosed location.
"Hey...can I text my Mom and let her know what's going on?" Double checking with Mom was always an after thought. Oopps.
"No need."
"No need?"
"Yeah. I already called her."
"You what?!"
"I had to get permission to kidnap you."
I smiled. "OH. Is that what this is?"
"Yep.You're my hostage." His hand grabbed mine and gave it a squeeze. "And you're going to like it."
I laughed. And then I heard a snort from the backseat. I whipped my head around and then remembered I was blind. I didn't remember seeing anyone in the back seat on the way in.
"Is someone back there?" Silence.
"Hello?...Jace is someone back there?"
"Don't worry about it." Jace replied. "I... uh... have to drop my little sister off at her piano lessons."
Well, that could be true. But it totally sounded like he made it up on the spot. Luckily, I am a pro Facebook stalker.
"You don't have a little sister."
"Jane." More giggling from the backseat. Clearly more than one person was trying really hard not to laugh. And it clearly wasn't working. Jace squeezed my hand and in a steady voice said,
"Don't worry about it."
"Ok." I said hesitantly. But then I shook it off. I figured it must be part of this whole kidnapping scheme.
Finally the car pulled to a stop and Jace got out and opened my door. He helped me out as I was now an incapable blind woman. One hand in mine, the other on my back. OH, it felt nice.
Fortunately for me, Jace kept me close as we trekked across an unknown and treacherous terrain. Which felt a lot like grass. Go figure.
Man! This was so exciting! With every step my heart pounded faster. I LOVE surprises. LOVE them! I suddenly heard soft music coming from nearby. A huge smile spread across my face. I didn't even know what was going on, but I was thrilled to be there. And Jace was holding my hand, so that was pretty awesome too.
Finally we came to a stop.
"Ok, here we are! Are you ready for this? "
"So ready!" I replied. My mind flew through millions of possibilities. Present? Party? Picnic? A Kiss? OH...that would be nice. Yeah, I could go for that.
Distracted by smooching thoughts, it took me a second to realize my blindfold was gone.
We stood on a cobblestone path in a garden that rivaled the Garden of Eden. The path weaved through color coordinated blossoms and perfectly trimmed trees and shaped bushes. Before me stood a shining white Gazebo drizzled with purple speckled ivy. To my right sat an enormous water fountain, and I could hear the constant trickle of water along with the soft jazzy music. It seriously looked like I had walked into a "Romantic Garden" Pintrist board.
"Oh. My. Word. Jace..." I couldn't find the words. I turned to look at him. He was grinning that million dollar smile as he lead me into the center of the Gazebo. Jace took both my hands and looked directly into my soul. I peered into his ocean blue eyes and felt my heart sink. This was just...a dream. The garden, this moment with Jace and his perfect blue eyes. It won't last. Jace is leaving. There is just no way. This is just so unfair.
"Jane," Jace began, his voice soft as warm chocolate, "This is completely unfair. " Hey! That's just what I was thinking. We even think the same. *Sob*
"I feel like even though I just barely met you, I've known you forever. Every moment I spend with you just feels like..." He closed his angel eyes and said, "Like I don't want it to end. I...Jane..I'm so sorry." He brought his hand up and gently placed his hand on my cheek.
"Sorry for what?" I asked this as my way of saying, "It's Ok you have to leave. There is nothing to be sorry about."
But he wasn't apologizing for that. Instead he answered, "For not doing this earlier."
And then there was that moment BEFORE the moment. Anticipation grips your every nerve. Air suddenly doesn't exist (OR your lungs forgot how to work. One of the two). Your mind is spinning, your heart pounds in your chest and all at once fear strikes through your veins...
And then he comes closer. And you close your eyes...but you can still see him in your mind, slowly getting closer and closer until suddenly...
He's gone.
Wait, what?
Something's wrong. This is not right. I opened my eyes to see Jace kneeling before me. KNEELING. What the crap was he doing?! My mind came to the conclusion pretty quick. What else could he be doing?? The kidnapping, the music, the garden, the perfect blue shirt that matched his eyes. Oh, no.
"Jane,"
Uh-oh. He was staring into my eyes. "Will you..." he looked down to grab something from his pocket. I saw it coming a mile away. A ring box. Shock shook me to the soul. Jace is LEAVING! He has a mission call! He can't get married. Gosh, I barely know this guy...!
And then he finished his question, opening the ring box.
"Will you promise to write me?"
Did I just hear that correctly?
Taking a quick look, the ring was clearly a classy CTR ring from Deseret book. Relief washed over me. He's not proposing. PHEW!
I saw the quirky smile on Jace's face and started to shake my head and laugh.
"OH my gosh Jace!! Not funny. So not funny. But yes" I said, "Of course!"Jace began chuckling as he rose and place the sparking CTR ring on my right ring finger.
"You don't have to wait for me." Jace held my hand in his. "That would be cruel and unfair. And I don't want you to make any promises that you can't guarantee to keep. So please, Jane. Please write to me." I smiled up at him.
"Of course I will."
And then he was there. Kissing me. No moment before the moment I didn't even see ti coming. I pulled back after a second, just trying to catch my breath. We both smiled and then went back for more.
Jace wrapped his arms around me, picked me up, and spun me around. My heart soared.
That was when I heard the whoops and hollers. Jace set me down and we both looked towards the sounds.
Our friends Will and Marianne stood outside the Gazebo. I felt my face go Red hot. So, apparently we had an audience.
"Oh my gosh," I mumbled totally embarrassed. I hid my face in Jace's shoulder.
"Hey guys!" Jace hollered. "Did you get it?"
"Every second!" Will held up his phone.
"And I got pictures!" added Marianne.
"Well, THAT'S going in your wedding video." Will exclaimed as he looked at Marianne's perfectly timed picture. We all laughed and both Jace and I gave him a shove.
"Hey! You never know what's going to happen," Will defended himself.
"Well, I know what's going to happen," Jace said, "We are going to dinner" He scooped me up in the classic honeymoon carry and we made our way back to the car.
I looked down at the beautiful silver diamond studded engraved CTR ring on my finger and smiled.
"You know what, Jace?" I announced, " I love you." And then I kissed him again. :)
